Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the shaping of texts meaning, by another text. This could be through homage, parody and pastiche. Some texts use explicit intertextuality where they refer directly to the other media texts. Examples of this is in The Simpsons, Family Guy and can very often appear in TV adverts, as this helps the audience to recognise the references and it makes them feel clever for knowing what the reference is from. However, in a media text like Family Guy where there are so many explicit references in order to gain pleasure from watching it you need to have watched the other media texts they are referencing in order to understand what is going on, otherwise some could find it confusing. If a text is referencing other texts but not in an obvious way so that it doesn't make sense, then it doesn't matter as much if you have or haven't seen it because you can still gain pleasure from watching it because it isn't as confusing. Intertexuality can be reflected in the fluidity of genre boundaries and in the blurring of genres.

After researching intertextuality I have decided that it isn't something I will be including in our own video, as although it is becoming increasingly popular and I like the features of it it is too complicated to include in our own work, as the references need to be understood by your audience.

Audience Feedback

In todays lesson we watched each others one minute of footage and gave each other feedback. This is the followng feedback we recieved from our primary audience:

Positives
  • Good editing on the beat
  • Loved the black and white- adds to the atmosphere of song
  • Good framing on bridge
  • Good tracking shot

Negatives
  • Shot of tumbling weir to the church was unclear in remarks to the narrative- doesn't flow with rest of shots
  • Introduce colour- maybe bring out some of the orange in the leaves
  • Some of the pan shots were too fast
  • Include more shots of protagonist
By getting our primary audience to watch our work often it ensures that we are constantly getting honest feedback on what they like and don't like. This means we are then able to improve our video to suit our audiences taste as otherwise we would end up just making the video for ourselves and would only appeal to a small audience. We also found that the males in our class who originally said our idea doesn't appeal to them ended up liking how it was on the beat and the fact that it was in black and white. We hope to take all their feedback on board to make our narrative as strong as possible.

One Minute of Footage

This is a rough draft of our one minute of footage. By editing what we have so far and putting it in order means that when it comes to filming the rest of the shots and editing it means that we already have some sort of structure to work with and gives us a rough idea of what else needs to go where and how much footage we need for each verse. At the end of this clip there are two shots that we need to film and edit again as they didn't work how we would have liked it to, however by experimenting with the fottage now we know what works and what doesn't when it comes to the final product.

Audience Profile

When doing our pitch to our class Eleanor said our idea for the music video and the genre appealed to her, so we have decided to use her for our audience profile.

Name: Eleanor Savage
Age: 17

What genre of music do you listen to?
Pop/rock

What is your favourite type of music video?
When you can see the musician/s and a narrative throughout

What are your initial thoughts on our narrative?
Unique, simple but effective

What do you like?
There is nothing else i've seen like it, I like the use of the individual shots

What would you improve?
Include more shots of the protagonist to keep narrative going

How do you access the media?
Phone, laptop

How do you find out about music/ videos?
Word of mouth/friends

What social media do you spend most time on?

By doing this post it helps us to understand what people from our target audience like and would expect to find in a music video from our genre and it means that we have somebody that we can continually get honest feedback from to help us improve our video throughtout. It also gives us a clear understanding of how to address our audience by the types of social media they use and how they ten find out about music/vidoes.
